AI in Daily Life
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving technology designed to streamline essential tasks, from self-driving cars to personalized marketing campaigns. While still inconsistent in certain areas, like driving, AI has showcased meaningful potential in marketing avenues. The technology has proven particularly valuable for retail and consumer goods businesses, with companies like Whole Foods and Dove using AI to personalize customer experiences and optimize ad campaigns. Responding to consumer demands for a more personal shopping experience, Whole Foods addressed the inefficiency of traditional retail interactions. They implemented a revolutionary concept called Walk Out in 24 stores, completely automating the checkout process through AI sensors and cameras. However, personalization remains a key element. Just Walk Out utilizes individualized data collection to understand customers’ shopping habits and tailor product recommendations to their specific needs.
Real Example of AI in Marketing
Dove embraced artificial intelligence technology through its invaluable Real Beauty campaign that aimed to redefine beauty as a concept to challenge the previously judgmental standards that would bring women down to a state of insecurity and inadequacy. The company launched a viral video via YouTube to showcase its mission in the campaign to form a more inclusive ideology about “real beauty” among women by demonstrating how self-perception and reality can become distorted with emotional storytelling.
Dove’s video experienced widespread reach among the masses, with the buzz generated in all available avenues without much-associated circulation costs, to illuminate the message that women should see value in their inner beauty and individuality rather than unrealistic standards.
Given the advent of artificial intelligence in our daily lives, timeliness opens up the need to clarify the meaning of real beauty since such technology can blur reality in the traditional sense. The video depicts a woman typing different inputs about beauty into an AI image generator, which first returns distorted images of models that no one can realistically emulate. Still, it later shows an inclusive interpretation with a collage of authentic everyday women. The company is anticipating the ubiquity of artificial intelligence next year by adopting this mindset for the future:
“To celebrate 20 years of championing it, Dove vows never to use AI to distort women’s images. True beauty lies in celebrating our real selves.”
